Medical Product Safety Network (MedSun)

The Medical Product Safety Network (MedSun) was designed to provide the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) with timely, high-quality information about problems with medical products on the market and to provide a channel of communication between FDA and the clinical world. This marked the beginning of electronic reporting of adverse medical device events by means of a secure FDA Web site. Data collection for this phase began in February 2002 with approximately 20 hospitals on board. Sites could fulfill their Safe Medical Devices Act requirements by reporting through the project while making an important public health contribution through their participation. Since that time, the project has expanded and moved westward to encompass 350 facilities in all regions of the continental United States. MedSun has received over 6,000 reports about medical device problems. In addition, the project now elicits reports about problems with cells and tissues in addition to medical devices.

The project maintains two Web sites: https://www.medsun.net/, which is used for recruitment, and https://www.medsun.net/participants, which is used primarily by participating sites to learn about available resources, such as audio conferences available to them.
